Lifts and Handrails
When selecting a lift for a site
requiring a handrail, choose the lift carefully.á Note that some lift drive systems
have motors located between the tubes and
therefore canÆt fit a code compliant handrail.á Some manufacturers use the same
2ö diameter tube as their guide rails.á If handrails will be required be sure
specify the diameter, position and height
range.
Pedestrian Handrail
Replacement
When the tubular guide rails
are installed it is generally necessary to remove
the existing handrails.á In other cases, the location
of the guide rails may make access to the handrails
difficult.á This could create a safety
problem for stairway pedestrians and could also create building code
problems.
The lift guide rails are not
suitable for use as handrails due to their height
and 2ö diameter.
A third handrail tube, located
at the correct height and with a code compliant
diameter of 1 1/2ö can be added to the guide rails.
